Dining out in Phuket

Phuket is blessed with some of the best fine dining opportunities in Thailand. Not only is the food of a high standard, the views from some of the West Coast beach restaurants would put many other destinations to shame.

For visitors who are a little more adventurous it's always fun to go local and you'll certainly be made welcome in the many Thai restaurants around the island. Eating out is such an intregal part of Thai culture; indeed a standard Thai greeting translates as 'Have you eaten yet?' So go with the flow and get out and enjoy the wonderful dining opportunities here.

'Special Raining Price' in Phuket

My partner and I have been to Phuket numerous times. In 2007 we visited during July which is considered to be 'monsoon season'. We really enjoyed the weather at this time. It was very humid and rained every day but only for one hour max and at the same time each day. At about 3pm we would watch the dark clouds roll in and it would start puring down. By 4pm the clouds were disappearing as fast as they came in and the sun would shine again. It was really refreshing to have the downpour and an absolutely great time to go shopping. Yes, we got wet, but it was so humid that it did not matter. The markets were quiet and all of the shopkeepers wanted to give us 'special raining price'. Due to the downtime because of the rain the shops found the their customers would disappear so they treasured the ones that were brave enough to face the rain. We got some great 'special raining prices' and had a lot of fun doing it.

James Bond Island Tour Phuket

Generally, this tour combines the wonderfully shaped limestone 'karsts' or caves of Phang Nga Bay with a trip to James Bond Island. Some tours may provide lunch for you on board a boat and others stop at the Sea Gypsy Village for lunch. The Sea Gypsy Village is a village built on water. There are hundreds of small houses as well as markets, schools and etc. It is an extremely interesting and very cultural experience.

Some tours will also stop at Lawa Island in the south of the bay for some swimming. Crystal clear and warm waters make it a great place for swimming and relaxing.

Of course, the best part of the day is getting to explore the sea caves and witnessing the eco system inside the heart of the karsts. James Bond Island is so-named because it featured in 1974's Bond movie 'The Man with the Golden Gun'. Great sights, great food.

Phuket Fantasea

Phuket Fantasea is a cultural theme park in Kamala Beach and has become a popular tourist destination in its own right. Costing over 3,500 million Baht to create and build, Phuket Fantasea is the absolute ultimate in night-time entertainment. Consisting of a 'Las Vegas-style' show inspired by Thailand's rich and exotic heritage it combines high-technology, pyrotechnics, and tales of times gone by, the 140-acre site houses a number of attractions exploring Thailand’s myths, legends and history. Visitors are treated to battle re-enactments, magicians who make elephants fly and disappear, ‘big show’ song and dance numbers, and aerial ballet. The Palace of the Elephants, 3000-seat theatre is of particular interest.

Also on the property are attractions and side shows as well as shopping alongside a number of first rate restaurants. For the children there are costumes, color and side show games to keep them entertained for hours.

Generally, adult admission with dinner is 1,900 Baht and for children 1,700 Baht. Without dinner an adult ticket is 1,500 Baht for adults and children. It is possible to upgrade your ticket to a 'GOld Seat' for 250 Baht. You can also arrange to be picked up from your hotel for around 300 Baht.

Note that there are plenty of tour companies in Phuket in which you may be able to purchase the tickets a little cheaper (if you are a good barterer).
