About Phuket

At 550sq km Phuket is the biggest island on the west coast of Southern Thailand in the Andaman Sea. Phuket has glorious mountains covered by vast forests. The lowlands are comprised of rubber plantations, pineapples and coconuts.

The residents of Phuket consist of Thais, Chinese, Malays and Chao Leh, sea gypsies. Most people reside around Phuket city and Patong beach. Patong Beach is the most popular and built up beach in Phuket.
In the past, Phuket’s economy was based on tin mining. After the demand for tin declined, tourism has dominated Phuket’s highest income. Other local economies include rubber, pearl farms, marine products and agricultural products.

The main religion in Phuket is Buddhism and Thai Muslims make up approximately 35% of Phuket’s population.

AdministrationPhuket is divided into three administrative districts; Muang (Phuket town) with 8 communes, Kathu with 3 communes and Thalang with 6 communes. The Phuket provincial governor and district chiefs are elected by the central government in Bangkok.

Symbol Thao Thep Kasattri and Thao Sri Sunthon, two local heroines, who chased Burmese invasion in 1785, received the honorary titles from King Rama I.
